Rwanda Efficient Cookstoves

About This Project

This project uses innovative new technology to make efficient cookstoves and distribute them across Rwanda. These cookstoves reduce fuel consumption, improve living conditions, and help the environment.

How does it work?

Biomass, principally firewood and charcoal, holds huge importance in Rwanda, accounting for a significant proportion of energy consumption. Cooking is generally carried out on thermally inefficient traditional devices and produces large amounts of smoke and indoor air pollution. The improved stove has been designed to balance efficiency, safety, cost, stability and strength with a focus on using locally available materials. By distributing these cookstoves to communities in Rwanda, this project benefits the environment by significantly reducing fuel consumption. Health conditions inside homes are improved due to the presence of less indoor smoke, and families can spend less time collecting wood fuel and more time with their families.

About the project developer

This project has been jointly developed by Co2balance/UK and Likano Project Development/Austria. Both companies are focusing on the development and implementation of high-impact carbon mitigation projects in Eastern Africa. The local partner in Rwanda is FAPDR, an NGO specialised in the preparation and implementation of improved cook stove projects. FAPDR has been working with the team since 2013, main activities are baseline and project studies/tests, dissemination of cook stoves and awareness raising.

By reducing the consumption of non-renewable wood and providing cookstoves with fuel savings, this project reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Simultaneously, the project generates employment and income for people via the distribution and maintenance of the stoves, as well as training and employing community education staff. What’s not to love?

Sidrap Wind Farm

Location: Indonesia

About This Project

The 75 MegaWatt (MW) Sidrap Wind Farm project is located in the Sidrap region, in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The project is Indonesia’s first utility scale wind farm and began providing power to the Southern Sulawesi PLN grid in March 2018.

How does it work?

UPC Renewables developed this wind farm with the support of the local community using 30 Gamesa 2.5 MW turbines. These turbines are rotated by the powerful winds in the region, producing vast amounts of energy for the local community; 253,000 MWh of renewable energy per year to the South Sulawesi national grid - enough to power over 70,000 local homes! By producing this much power it replaces the reliance on fossil fuels, not only creating jobs, and energy, but also reducing pollution in the local environment.

About the project developer

UPC renewable is responsible for developing 3,500 MW of now operating wind and solar power projects across the world. They’re one of the global leaders in renewable energy and at the forefront of wind and solar technology. Sidrap Wind Farm completed construction on April 5th, 2018 and was inaugurated by the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo on July 5th, 2018. The operation continues to meet or exceed expectations.

Vichada Reforestation

Location: Colombia

About This Project

The project is located in the Vichada Department and the Orinoco river basin, Colombia. It combines reforestation with biodiversity protection and ecosystem restoration, whilst contributing to the mitigation of the climate crisis.

How does it work?

The rain forests of South America have been in retreat for centuries. This project is changing that. In addition to the reforestation of the savannah, the project protects the remaining patches of native vegetation and creates additional conservation areas on the banks of rivers and other watersheds. The project will plant more than 80 million trees (offsetting >1.5 million tonnes of CO2) to: offer a natural habitat for native animals and plants, protect and enrich the soil, save and filter water, and contribute to the mitigation of the greenhouse effect.

About the project developer

CO2OL have spent decades in the development, implementation and certification of sustainable forestry, agroforestry and integrated land use projects. CO2OL started this project in 2006 and are still working to create further reaching and lasting benefits for the community, the local environment, and the global climate.

This project supports local schools in order to stop child labour, creates regional job opportunities, and pushes for technology transfers, leading to stable and sustainable economic growth in the region. The forests also provide perfect habitats for native and migratory animals in an area of greater than 75,000ha.
